Management Internship Numbers

Every round people want to know how many people are accepted for each internship. It is really hard to say since it varies so much by position and by recruiting season (there can be everywhere from 1 person for a posting to 29 for the Conservation Education Presenters).
Someone on the Facebook page asked a question about estimating the number of Management Interns and someone replied with some estimates she got last year by an MI recruiter (this person has done a few internships and you can see her blog here)

Here are her estimates:
20 for F&B
15-18 for Merch
13-15 for Park Ops
13-15 Lodging (including 5 for recreation)
3 for ASE
1 for ESPN

I decided that I was interested in knowing this A quick search using some of my excellent creeping skills, it looks like there are 120 current management interns. That number isn't by line of business, but here is how it looks like when I try to break it down:

10 F&B Quick Service
3 F&B ODV
17 F&B Full Service
26 Merch
4 Recreation
8 Attraction
5 Custodial-Parks
6 Entertainment
11 Housekeeping
12 Front Desk

5 Custodial-Resorts
6 Catering
2 Animals, Science, and Environment
1 Culinary
1 Transportation (river boat)

If you are counting that is only 116. I didn't go one by one through all 120, so I don't know where the missing 4 went, but I know there is a missing ESPN intern and potentially additional culinary interns. I was clicking there a few to try and find the missing ones and there just seemed to be a TON of F&B, Custodial, and Merch, so maybe a few missing ones go in there.

Now some of the ones I've listed above fall under the same posting (eg. attractions, transportation and custodial fall under park ops=19 interns. housekeeping, front desk, and recreation fall under lodging=26 interns) Well actually, custodial can fall under park ops or lodging so those numbers might differ a little, too. However, I hope this gives people a better idea of how many management interns there are. Obviously it can, and will, differ semester by semester by area needs, funding, etc but this is hopefully a start.

I cannot help with how many apply for each position, but they are definitely competitive so take your time in preparing your application and for each interview you may receive. Good luck and hopefully you'll be making your way to management at Disney soon!

The Screening Interview

As this application cycle gets underway, I am seeing a ton of people on the Facebook page wanting to know more about the screening interview. For my first internship I only applied to Animal Programs positions, which do not require a screening interview. Instead the animal programs team as a questionnaire they send out to applicants that helps them determine who they are going to continue to consider for interviews.

For my second round of applying for internships, I applied for more of a variety (Animal Programs, an MI, and other PIs). Once again Animal Programs doesn't use a screening interview, but since I had applied for other positions I recieved an email to schedule time for a screening interview. I believe it showed up under my MI, but this screening interview (as the recruiter will tell you when you start) can be used for any/all positions you applied for. I actually applied to many of my PIs after my screening, including the one I ultimately was hired for. I have, however, heard of individuals who have been called back to answer additional questions and even someone on the Facebook group mentioned having 3 screeners last year!

Almost everyone who has passed the computer resume screen gets a screening interview since it is often how the recruiters decide which names to pass on to the individual hiring managers. However, don't be worried if you don't receive one right away, or even after other people on the internet have had them. It looks like this year they are starting with people who applied for Alumni Only, but they have a ton of people and will eventually get to you (unless however the department you are applying within doesn't use the screening interview).

When you do get your email for a screening interview you will use your dashboard to schedule a time. Don't worry if you don't see a time available on the site. Times are always getting added so just try waiting a few hours to a day to see if more open up before reaching out to the recruiter if you really need some more options. There are all sorts of times, too. I have seen people have them for just about any day of the week at almost any time (I think I remember seeing people schedule them past 8 o'clock at night!) Just make sure to schedule your interview within 2 days of getting the email and make sure to chose a time that will allow you to be in a calm place, without distractions, and where you won't have to be rushing from one place to another.

After scheduling your phone screen, sit back and try to be well prepared about thinking of potential interview questions and questions you want to ask the interviewer. Depending on the position you are applying for this might be your first of a few rounds of interviews or it might be the only one used to help make a decision. Because of this, try to be yourself, smile, and be proud of your work and accomplishments so you can prove to those recruiters that you are the perfect person for the job. Remember, don't stress too much! The recruiters are really nice people who want to see people succeed and know how nerve wracking it can be. So prepare, have some notes, but make sure you are calm so you can ace that screening interview!

(I'll do a post on potential questions when I get a chance!)

Progress

Today is 10 weeks post-op for my foot. I had an appointment with the doctor here in Orlando that my surgeon back home referred me to. He said that I am allowed to start wearing shoes again! It's weird wearing both shoes again. He said some days could be more painful and I could have more swelling so to keep my boot around, but it feels good knowing I won't have to wear the super hot, annoying contraption as often. I also have to start figuring out if I want to go to therapy or if I want to try and do it on my own.

I celebrated my new freedom by taking a mini-walk around Port Orleans French Quarter. I even talked to a new CP for a bit about PIs and tried to see if the store had an item I am trying to find. I even creepily saw a girl working whose blog I have read a long time, but I didn't have the guts to tell her.

Spring 2016 PIs

Even though I am not applying for any PIs, I've joined the Spring 2016 Professional Internship Facebook group. Every application season someone always creates a Facebook group. The group is a great resource of current and former PIs and is nice to stay updated along the recruiting process. Before I applied for any internships, I followed the Facebook groups to get an idea of what to expect. Honestly, when I did end up applying I felt so much more like a pro since I had done as much research as possible and it helped reduce the waiting game anxiety a bit. I think it is interesting in seeing the next group of future PIs find their way through the process and I hope that my experience in my two vastly different PIs can help a little by my lurking and answering questions.

If you are applying to a PI, good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask! Also, if you are not yet a member of the Facebook Spring 2016 page here is a link so you can join your fellow hopefuls: Disney Professional Internships Spring 2016

Packing for the Final Move

Agh. I have been a really bad packer this for this move. Last year I feel like I know exactly what I was doing and didn't really leave anything for the last minute. Then when I moved in Florida I knew what fit in my car and started my moves across town in advance. When I finally moved back to Michigan from Florida I was so nervous that everything wasn't going to fit in my car that I was packed with days to spare just living out of a suitcase.

But this time is so much more overwhelming. During college and my move to Florida last year I went into the situations having furnished places to live, being limited by space of the vehicles we were driving in, and with the assumption that I would be move in a few months so I just needed to pack things to get by. This move is so different in that this is a permanent move that is states away. I don't want to leave junk in my parents house to clutter up space or forget anything I might want since I don't know when I'll be back to get it. I also have things like my bed, dresser, and other furnature that I've never had to deal with before. I feel like there is also this pressure to bring all these things, but in reality I'm basically moving into one bedroom so I don't actually have a ton more room than I did the past year for my things.

I am finally feeling the pressure to get everything done but it's hard just knowing what there is left to do. My past packing experiences felt so clear cut on what needed to be done, but hopefully this will be my last move; at least for a few years anyways.

Kefta Pocket Recipe

The Kefta Pocket from Morroco was one of the last things I tried last year at EPCOT's Food and Wine Festival, but was without a doubt one of my top 2 (tied with the corn cheesecake from Mexico). As I was looking at the menu's for this year's festival (see 2015 Food and Wine Preview Post) I found a recipe for the Kefta Pockets. They were AH-MAZING. So I will have to try this recipe sometime. Honestly, I will probably just buy hummus because I am a little lazy, but the rest is probably worth the try!

If you want to try it to, here is a link: Kefta Pocket Recipe

Food and Wine 2015

So I was thinking about my return to Disney and realized shortly after my return the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival would be starting up again. It was a ton of fun eating and drinking around the world and I can't wait to do it again in just over a month!

Disney has already published what is going to be served at each kiosk, so I decided to take a sneak peak at what some of my paychecks would be going towards.

Africa
  • Buttered Chicken with Micro Cilantro and Naan Bread
    • This is new this year, but I've had the buttered chicken at Sanaa and it is delicious, so I figure this has to be good, too!
Belgium
  • Belgium waffle with warm chocolate ganache and whipped cream
  • Belgium waffle with berry compote and whipped cream
    • Let's be real. Waffles are delicious. Add some yummy toppings and you've got me sold! I had the waffle with berry last year, so maybe I'll do the chocolate one this year
Brazil
  • –Escondidinho de carne, “Little Hidden One”: layered meat pie with mashed yucca
    • Not 100% I'll get this, but the reviews are good and the pictures look promising!
  • –Pão de queijo: Brazilian cheese bread
    • Tried some of my friend's last year. It is cheese and bread. Enough said.
Canada
  • Canadian cheddar cheese soup
    • Had it last year, and it is SOOOO good.
  • Note: will not be getting the “Le Cellier” wild mushroom beef filet mignon with truffle butter sauce this year. Wasn't impressed and felt obliged to eat it since it was one the more expensive things I bought.
Cheese Studio
  • Cheese fondue with sourdough bread
    • This is a new booth this year that is in Future World. The other cheese pairings don't look like they'll be my cup of tea so I'll pass on those
Chew Lab
  • Liquid Nitro Chocolate Almond Truffle with Warm Whiskey Caramel
    • This is the other new booth in Future World. We made liquid nitrogen ice cream in high school and it was DELICIOUS. So this is a must!
China
  • Happy Peach with peach liqueur and dark rum
    • Not a big Asian food person. Maybe will get the chicken potstickers or Gaoli Beef Slide in China if they get really good reviews, but this drink looks pretty good

Craft Beers
  • Flight #1: Florida Harvest
    • Brew Hub Keybilly Island Ale, Lakeland, FL
    • Two Henrys Blueberry Vanilla American Wheat Ale, Plant City, FL
    • Orlando Brewing Grateful Pumpkin, Orlando, FL
    • Swamp Head Wild Night® Honey Cream Ale, Gainsville, FL
      • Not a big alcohol person so I would rather spend the money on food in general, but this flight looks like it could be worth a try!
Desserts and Champagne
  • Frozen S’mores featuring Monin® Toasted Marshmallow Syrup
    • Who doesn't love S'mores?!?!
Farm Fresh
  • Loaded mac n’ cheese with Nueske’s® pepper bacon, cheddar cheese, peppers and green onions
  • Hard cider flight:
    • Woodchuck Raspberry Hard Cider
    • Wyder’s® Dry Pear Hard Cider
    • Two Henrys Elderberry Hard Cider
    • ACE Hard Pumpkin Cider
    • I LOVE cider, so this is one drink option I will get! I am super sad about the Pepper Bacon Hash not being on the menu this year, but I guess Mac and Cheese will have to do :)
France
  • Ice Pop Pomme: Apple juice, vodka, and St. Germain liqueur
    • This is basically what we all called an "adult push pop" at food and wine this year
    • Also, the crème brûlée was GROSS last year. My friend and I both throught it was disgusting. I finished mine, but she just threw hers out.
Germany
  • Schinkennudeln: Pasta gratin with ham and cheese*
  • Roast bratwurst in a pretzel roll
  • Apple strudel with vanilla sauce
    • I don't HAVE to have anything from this booth, but it all looks good, too. I had the bratwurst last year and it was pretty good.
Hawai'i
  • Kālua Pork Slider with sweet and sour Pineapple chutney and spicy mayonnaise
    • This was one of my favorites last year. I even got it 2 or 3 times.
Hops and Barley
  • Florida grass fed beef slider with pimento cheese
  • Fresh baked carrot cake with Craisins® and cream cheese icing
    • I got both of these last year. The Carrot cake was one of my favorite desserts for sure! (but I'm also a sucker for cream cheese frosting!)
Intermissions Cafe
  • Caposaldo Peach Moscato Sweet Sparkling Wine
    • I like Peach flavored things and make it sparkling will be even better
    • maybe will get the Southwest Chicken Wrap
Ireland
  • Warm Chocolate Pudding with Kerrygold irish Cream Liquor Custard
    • I never ended up getting this last year, so I'll have to try it this year
Italy
  • Cannoli al cioccolato: Chocolate-covered cannoli filled with sweet ricotta, chocolate and candied fruit
    • Not even sure I'll end up getting it. It was good last year, but might not be good enough to justify the money again
Mexico
  • Chilaquiles de pollo: Corn chips layered with seasoned chicken, queso fresco, sour cream and cilantro
    • This is new this year and sounds promising, so I will have to see what it will look like when I get there
  • Pastel de elote con queso: sweet corn cheesecake
    • This was perhaps my absolute FAVORITE thing last year. I WILL get this and WILL get it multiple times too
Morocco
  • Kefta pocket: Ground seasoned beef in a pita pocket
    • The Mexico cheesecake and this were my top 2 items BY FAR. I was seriously crossing my fingers that they would bring it back this year
  • Mimosa Royale
    • I've never had a mimosa and this might be the time to try one!
Scottland
  • The Tipsy Laird: Whiskey-soaked cake with lemon cream and toasted oats

You might note that there are some booths missing. Nothing at these booths look good enough for me to spend the money on since Food and Wine adds up quickly. Notes on the locations that I am passing on.
  • Australia, Dominican Republic, Fife and Drum, France, Greece, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Sustainable Chew, Wine Studio
    • not a big seafood, lamb, asian food, etc. fan so passing on these booths
  • China (see notes above under China)
  • Patagonia
    • Beef empanada last year was alright, but not sure I'll get it again
  • Poland
    • pierogi's are good and all, but the portions are small and if I remember right, they were expensive so I would rather buy some more of my favorites
  • Joeffry's locations
    •  these are specialty alcoholic drinks. some look good, but are expensive so will probably pass
  • Refreshment Port
    • has an "enhanced" menu, but the only thing that looks good is the Croissant Doughnut which is served all the time so will just get it another time of year
  • Refreshment Cool Post
    • food option doesn't look great, and not sure if I will spend the money on the drinks

I am super excited to get my passport book and start my journey to eat and drink around the world!
